LINGIN (the repackaged album) 2007

POLITICAL JINGLE

April 25th, 2007 by aggressiveaudio

Two weeks ago, a member from our friendster account informed us that our song “Senior Citizen” was used as a political jingle in Minglanilla, Cebu.
I was alarmed to hear about it because we recently played for their Kabanhawan Festival on Easter Sunday. I politely asked the person to check who the
candidate was so that we can verify, but he told us instead to personally listen to it. And so we did, we went to Minglanilla last week to check
but not only that we found out that it was true, but it was used to represent the whole Eddie Selma party; the incumbent mayor of Minglanilla.

For days we tried to reach the mayors’ office to ask about the matter, instead we were passed along from office to office, person to person, secretary to secretary
and we never got a chance to talk with any of the candidates or the official campaign manager which they always refer to. Then we talked to an Engineer named
Enad and he told us that the jingle was given as a “gift” from a certain supplier of the municipal office so they (Candidates) washed their hands off the case.
We ended up talking to this Eric (who never told our manager his last name); the businessman; the one who gave the jingle as a “gift” to the candidates, he said that he didn’t know
about things such as copyright, intellectual properties and said to file a complaint against the Mayors office instead.
He said he was sorry, that it was an honest mistake; a little way of telling us he also brushed our case aside.

What’s wrong here is that these candidates (or their people) didn’t even let us know that they will be using our song for their political party, or using the tune to support their
campaign without proper consent from the artist. In short it is illegal. And now, no one seems to assume the responsibility for using our song, we are not sure where to go
after days of chasing these people by phone, who their secretaries never gives worthy information. We feel helpless.
And what makes it illegal is that these songs however published by ourselves (independent) are rightfully owned, copyrighted under the National Library
with all the legal and published documents.

this is the way they treat artists, most especially local artists like us who doesn’t have a powerful lawyer to defend the rights of our songs. These politicians will always
have the power to use a catchy song just to woo the voters in campaigning, and they don’t care and see that these songs are properties, although I do appreciate
some others who treat us with respect and dignity to inquire in using our songs. But we usually turn them down even though the price is right. Whenever you hear our song in a political jingle,
commercial advertising, endorsement of products where you hear our song being altered in any way, we never got a penny out of that. Assume they stole it.

This a cry. Support us, the local artists.
